University journals (UJs) – scholarly periodicals published or supported by higher education institutions – form an essential yet often overlooked part of the global scholarly publishing ecosystem. Frequently non-commercial and multilingual, they are embedded in local academic cultures. As a result, they help circulate knowledge within national contexts and in disciplines underrepresented in mainstream publishing. Yet, UJs remain systematically underrepresented in global indexing databases and largely absent from research assessment frameworks. Now a research project has been investigating the role of UJs in global scholarly communication. The goal is to better understand the challenges UJs face in a publishing environment dominated by a few major commercial players.
